“Playing” Django are a vintage swing group based in Birmingham. They delight and amaze audiences around the country with their interpretations of the classic sounds of the 1930’s & 1940’s using a line-up inspired by Django Reinhardt and Stephan Grappelli’s Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

The main advantages to booking this line up compared to a normal swing band are:

1. Volume. Because there are no drums (the crazy swing rhythms are provided by guitar instead) we have more flexibility as to what volume we plat at. We can play loud, if necessary (for swing dances, etc), but we also have the option of playing in quieter situations (formal dinners, etc).

2. Space. Because all the instruments are polyphonic (can play many notes simultaneously), we can achieve complicated arrangements using far fewer people than a normal swing band where all the horns are monophonic (can only play one note at a time)

We play a lot of standards like Sweet Georgia Brown, All Of Me, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, etc. mixed with suitable contemporary tunes like The Muppet Show, Belleville Rendezvous, etc.
